School of Humanities and Social Sciences

  • Dept. Early Childhood Education
    Over the past 37 years, the Department of Early Childhood Education has provided over 9500 excellent teachers to Gwangju and the surrounding area. More than 50% of the school commissioners, vice-commissioners and directors of schools in the Gwangju area including Jeollanam-do and jeollabuk-do have graduated from Songwon University. This typifies our dedication to helping students begin their career in the education field on a strong note. Furthermore, the department contains a custom built curriculum (in collaboration with the Graduates' Association) to provide a higher quality education. Moreover, the department runs a kindergarten affiliated with Songwon University to allow students the opportunity to practice. The department is committed to educating and preparing undergraduate students for a teaching career with the professional knowledge, skills, and field experience needed to become highly effective child care center employees and kindergarten teachers.
  • Dept. for Military Public Officials
    The Department for Military Public Officials, in accordance with the government’s plan* to gradually begin hiring more military officers, is keeping up to date with changes in Korea’s national defense and social environment. The department offers specialized programs for military employment and a custom built curriculum. It also cooperates with other governmental organizations, such as the air force, army and navy around the Gwangju area in order to offer diverse practice and training to students. The Department for Military Public Officials aims to educate students to be high-ranking administrators in the military, government, and other institutions and organizations of national security, where they will be planning, executing and evaluating the abilities of governmental policies, as well as providing high level leadership regarding changes and innovation.

  • Dept. of Social Welfare
    The Department of Social Welfare focuses on social welfare policies and practices in the pursuit of building a social security system for the industrialized elderly community, as well as establishing the best foundation for scholarship in Asia. In particular, the department provides specialized training for students in order to be experts in the area of social security for the elderly community. The practical curriculum of the department provides systemized education on both theory and practice so that students can serve as social welfare professionals at general social welfare centers, welfare facilities, and public offices. With highly qualified and experienced professors, the department is able to offer magnificent lecture content on fundamental areas of social welfare, such as categorized professional theories, advanced learning, and on-the-job training.
  • Dept. of Counseling Psychology
    The fast-paced, tightly packed, and high demanding nature of today’s society can often times cause people to face undue stress and confusion of values, making it more important than ever for professionals to prevent and cure mental and behavioral problems, and help people maintain a healthy self-image. Accepting our responsibility to meet the needs of the times, we are concentrating on the integration of practice and theory in order to upgrade, as well as help students effectively use, the current psychological knowledge in the clinical field. The department of counseling psychology is equipped with outstanding course and practical training in order to educate students to be extraordinary counselors.
  • Dept. of Railroad Transportation
    As the first Department of Railroad Transportation management in a private college, the department aims to educate a new generation of creative and professional railway officers. The demand for manpower in a safe and swift railroad transport industry has increased rapidly over the recent years. To keep up with this, the department is training specialists in railroad transportation management who will have superior knowledge and technical abilities. Additionally, the course for locomotive engineering is operating in collaboration with Korail and the Seoul Metro HR department to provide the most professionally tailored education possible.
  • Dept. of Finance & Tax Management
    The Department of Finance and Tax Management has been striving to promote a practical economic education by fostering real-time economic knowledge that can be readily applied to actual problems in real life with a particular emphasis on finance and a firm’s behavior. The department has been producing superb experts in the industry and contributing to the regional community for the last 30 years. Furthermore, the department offers various curriculums – including finance, taxation systems, management, and computer science – allowing students to be well equipped for employment in today’s rapidly changing economic environment.
  • Dept. of Airline Service
    Airline Service Department opens in 2013. In this course, you will be trained to become a professional stewardess working for the airline industry, both for domestic and international flights.
    The education goal is to train its students to become service experts with expert knowledge in airline service and global sense through specified training and learning programs. The professors from the ex-crew of Korean and Asiana Airlines will train airline service experts maximized in the quality and capabilities required to become crew. Students will be guided through practical airline service in theory, exercise and on- site training. The Airline Service Department is willing to be a reliable backer for young people who want to spread their dreams on the stage of the blue sky.

School of Natural Science

  • Dept. of Nursing Science
    With respect to the beautiful and fragile nature of the human condition, nursing is a practical study in the combination of professional science with the art of human interaction. The aspects of nursing are: humanity, health, environment and appropriate conduct befitting nurses. Because care-receivers are physical, psychological, social, cultural, and spiritual human beings, the practices of nursing professionals must develop in harmony with the environment throughout history. With an exceptional faculty, Songwon University reconciles theory and practice to provide excellent knowledge and experiences for students in the field.
  • Dept. of Dental Hygiene
    The Department of Dental Hygiene has been producing a 100% employment ratio since the original establishment of the department in 2008. The Department aims to produce professional dental hygienists who will play leading roles in the field, as well as training students to acquire high-level knowledge in up-to-date technology of dental hygiene. With advanced equipment and high quality education, Songwon provides expertise, onsite practice, and clinical practice in order to foster professionals who will serve the community as competent dental hygienists and contribute to the general improvement of oral health in our society.
  • The Department of Rehabilitation
    The Department of Rehabilitation aims to produce rehabilitation professionals who will conduct academic research, as well as develop effective rehabilitation services, in response to the changing social needs for rehabilitation and welfare of the disabled in the community. Songwon emphasizes the management of courses regarding rehabilitation and social welfare, including psychological and social assessment programs for the detection of disabilities in early childhood, as well as psychological rehabilitation programs to focus on the definition of rehabilitation in 2011.
  • The Department of speech rehabilitation & psychology (Pathology)
    Communication between people is an act of total Exchange of thoughts or feelings and speech is the most effective and important means of such a communication.
    The goals of the Department of speech rehabilitation & psychology are to cultivate speech therapists and therapeutic teachers as well as to study speech pathology. The Department deals with speech rehabilitation, which is the most essential type of rehabilitation for the disabled and the elderly. The most common speech-related disabilities are related to fluency impediments and general speech disorders. In order to meet this growing demand for specialists in speech rehabilitation psychology, the Department offers a curriculum that focuses on theoretical foundations and practical training. This training relates to various psychological tests, counseling and psychological therapy and strives to foster the quality of psychological examination and counseling.
  • Dept. of Food Science & nutrition
    The importance of developing healthy eating habits and the intake of proper nutrition has been very much emphasized recently in society today. The Department of Food Science and Nutrition is dedicated to illuminating the role of food and nutrition in the general health of society through education, research, outreach, and services. The department is committed to the excellence and the application of knowledge and expertise in classrooms, laboratories, and communities.
  • Dept. of Beauty Art
    The Department of Beauty Art educates cosmetologists in full-process beauty business, high technology equipment (the highest ratio in Gwangju) as well as allowing access to six advanced experimental laboratories. The department aims to cultivate competent experts to help in the beautification of the community. In order to produce professional cosmetologists, the department encourages students to attain at least three different certifications, as well as allowing them to have a wide variety of practical training in the field. With a competitive and verified technique under their belt, all students of the Department of Beauty Art will be able to find employment after graduation.

School of Art and Sports

  • Dept. of Social Physical Education
    Since the Social Physical Education Department was established in 2004, many students have won first prize and have received medals for Karate and Taekwondo in the Asian Games and other competitions, furthermore, numerous graduating students have gone on to become professional golfers. The primary goal of the department is to train specialists in physical education and sports. In order to achieve this objective, the department introduces new theoretical developments and practical skills by providing a composed curriculum and comprehensive assistance to students. In addition to a curriculum that offers balanced professional knowledge in the field, the department also helps to develop leaders in the fields of sports and leisure who can contribute to general public health and the creation of wholesome social environments.
  • Dept. of Practical Art
    With rapidly sophisticating public palette and an increased demand for practical art, a rapidly growing demand for professional art performers has emerged. The Practical Art Department at Songwon University is the very first department to provide a full-range practical art education including dance, music, and acting to students in Korea, and is proud to be the sole department in Gwangju area to do so at this time. The department aims to educate leaders who will spread Korean culture all over the world and develop diverse cultural productions in the art industry of Gwangju, which has risen to become a true cultural hub of Asia.

College of Engineering

  • Dept. of Electrical & Electronic Engineering
    The Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering aims to provide superlative knowledge in electro-technological fundamentals with an emphasis on the development of creative thinking skills. The department pursues the cultivation of leaders in power distribution systems, electro-optics, wireless systems, solid-state, communication systems, control systems, bio-electrical systems, signal processing, and the ever-evolving area of computers. The department supplies advanced equipment with excellent experimental facilities and experienced faculty to educate creative, broad minded, and competitive engineers.
  • Dept. of mechanical and automotive engineering
    The Department of Mechanical and Automotive engineering provides curriculum on the fundamental theories and disciplines required in mechanical and automotive engineering. The courses are continuously updated to fulfill the needs of these rapidly evolving industries. The recent government plan to invest 3.1 trillion won towards "Producing 1.2 million Greencars in 2015" and the plan of Gwangju to be the "City to Produce 1 million Greencars in 2020" will demand highly skilled manpower in the green car and molding industry. By completing the curriculum, the students will be able to acquire practical design abilities that can be put to use in the diverse fields of engineering.
  • Dept. of Computer information Science
    Department of Computer information science studies the design and effective use of the computer, the one device to play a major role in all human activities including culture, society, economics, and technology. The government has created a scholarship to cultivate professional manpower and will be investing 400 billion won until 2013 to educate over forty thousand skilled and competent people in the software and information technology industries. Notably, Gwangju has designated the Songam industrial complex as its very own "IT Valley" and has built a "CGI Center" to foster the development of CGI skills for this culturally significant industry which includes the production of films and video games. Students study hardware design and the development of sophisticated software (network programming, database, operating systems, and algorithms). The department aims to provide competent employees to major companies including the Korea Electronic Power Corporation and Korea Creative Content Agency, which both plan to settle in Gwangju.
  • Dept. of Civil Engineering
    The Department of Civil Engineering aims to contribute to sharpening the competitiveness of our cities, providing optimal infrastructure, designing the best urban environment through promoting our research and teaching programs about planning and maintaining human settlements, as well as restoring social infrastructure. With the increasing awareness of environmental pollution, the importance of environmental engineering as a high-tech academic subject has come further into the limelight. The department fosters a healthy student mindset based on the principle of respect for the human condition as pursued by environmental engineering and qualifies students to better serve the community by allowing them to acquire expert skills.
  • Dept. of Architectural Engineering
    The Department of Architectural Engineering has set the firm goal to cultivate future designers, managers, researchers, developers, bureaucrats, and builders fully harnessed with multi-disciplinary expertise and skills. The Department is committed to equipping these future experts, both as individuals and as a community, with the heart and mind to meet the lofty challenges of creating and advancing the quality of the built environment. Significantly, the department educates its students in the practical affairs and computer skills they will need to master the CAD program, and endeavors to help them become experts of their domain in the construction and definition of the built environment.
